George IV Matthew Boulton Old Sheffield Plate Tray

second quarter 19th century, Birmingham, of rounded rectangular form, with acanthus-crested gadrooned rim and rocaille handles, the plateau engraved with the arms of Lyon impaling Johnston.

Notes: The arms here are those of George Lyon of Kirkmichael (1804-1879), who married, on February 18, 1827, in Holywood, Dumfriesshire, Phoebe deCourcy Johnston (ca. 1809-1893), daughter of Captain (later Vice-Admiral) Charles James Johnston of Cowhill.


  • Condition: **In overall good condition. Some bumps to the relief of the handles and border, with some small areas of wear to the lead core, but no splits or losses noted. Surface scuffs and dings consistent with age and use. No bleed-through to the copper. Well-engraved armorial on a rubbed-in silver plaque. Marked (on the underside) with the Matthew Boulton "double sun" trademark.
