George IV Sterling Silver Inkstand, hallmarked London, 1823-1824, by Robert Hennell II (1763-1840; free 1785), of rectangular form with robust floral scroll rim, fitted with two pen trays, a taperstand-lidded nibs compartment, and silver-capped cut glass inkwell and pounce-pot, the whole raised on four floral scroll feet en suite, l. 8-1/2", w. 6-1/2", h. 4-1/2", 23.71 t. oz. (excluding glass elements).
- Condition: Scattered scuffs and bumps consistent with age. Two breaks on the rim, at the edges of opposing feet, have been professionally repaired and reinforced on the underside; one repair extends about 1-1/2" into the pen tray. These repairs are well-concealed on the upper side, however, and not aesthetically detracting. Wear to the detail on the relief. The candle extinguisher lacking, but retaining the original bobeche; the pounce pot and inkwell with original collars, but the inkwell with later cap (hallmarked London, 1852-1853, by Richard Sibley II). Glass elements appear to be original, with some frits and small chips, but generally good with no cracks or repairs. Hallmarked (on the underside) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London leopard's head; 3) the date letter "h" for 1823-1824; 4) the "RH" maker's mark of Robert Hennell II; and 5) the George IV bust duty mark; the detachable elements part-marked.
