George IV Storr and Mortimer Sterling Silver Platter

hallmarked London, 1829-1830, by Paul Storr, of shaped oval form, with well-chased shell-and-scroll rim, engraved, on the narrow sides, with the crest opposing the arms of Salwey quartering Hill, with Hooper quartering Hewitt and Ekins in pretence.
l. 16-3/8", w. 12-3/8", 48.87 t. oz.

  • Notes: The arms here are those of Henry Salwey (1794-1874), son of Theophilus Richard Salwey and Anna Maria Hill, who married, on March 13, 1828, Elizabeth Philippa Holder (1810-1886), daughter of John Hooper Holder and his first wife Elizabeth Alicia Hewitt. Salwey was a lieutenant colonel in the Coldstream guards and later served as M.P. for Ludlow, Shropshire 1837-1841 and 1847-1852. (His wife, Elizabeth Holder, is the "little girl" to whom Jane Austen referred in her October 1813 letter commenting - rather uncharitably - on the death of John Hooper Holder's first wife and his marriage to his second, Anne Ekins: "Only think of Mrs. Holder's being dead! Poor woman, she has done the only thing in the world she could possibly do to make one cease to abuse her. . . . Lucky for the little girl. An Anne Ekins can hardly be so unfit for the care of a child as a Mrs. Holder.")
