Notes: "Home Office Blues" was one of the first paintings in the Rodrigue/Xerox innovative advertising campaign of 2000, and it is the first in the series to be offered at auction. In 1999, George Rodrigue was approached by the famous New York advertising firm of Young and Rubicon on behalf of their client, Xerox. The prominent printing company wanted the artist to create a series of paintings combining the iconic Blue Dog with their new range of home office products. Rodrigue, always careful about accepting merchandising or advertising commissions, initially declined.

The advertising firm, however, was persistent and arranged for a meeting between two of their top agents and Rodrigue at the artist's Lafayette home. The meeting reminded Rodrigue of his early days in art school when he briefly considered a career in advertising and illustration - he soon agreed to take part in the campaign. Xerox agreed to his condition that he have complete autonomy regarding the images; the firm simply supplied a list of 'tag"words for his inspiration.

The painting is a complex composition rendered in blocks of bold, intense complimentary colors of blues and orange. The Blue Dog sits in an office chair slightly to the right of the canvas, gazing confidently out at the viewer - its image reflected in both the calendar on the wall and the copy from the inkjet printer on the desk. There is an intentional tranquility to the scene, suggestive of the calm and ease of working from home.
