George Rodrigue
(American/Louisiana, 1944-2013)

"Paradise Island (Three Blue Dogs)", ca. 2007

silkscreen on metal
signed lower right.
Framed.
framed 57-1/2" x 113-1/2"

Literature: Rodrigue, George and Wendy Wolfe, George Rodrigue Prints: A Catalogue Raisonne, 1970-2007, New York: Abrams, 2007.

Notes: In the early 2000s, George Rodrigue embraced computer technology and began to create silkscreens that combined his painted images with photography in a collage type construction. Rodrigue wrote, "In creating the Blue Dog silkscreens, I learned things on the computer that I probably otherwise would not have pursued; I altered the traditional methods I'd known for years and now created images specifically with the computer process in mind."
For the backdrop of "Paradise Island" Rodrigue used a photograph he took on his honeymoon in Fiji with his second wife, Wendy Wolfe, in 1997 and then incorporated three painted Blue Dogs. By enhancing the colors digitally, Rodrigue looked to make the image reminiscent of a vintage postcard. Rodrigue created a limited-edition silkscreen of "Paradise Island" and then a one-of-a-kind large silkscreen on metal.
