George V Silver and Tortoiseshell Cigar Box

  • Condition: Overall Condition: Good. Scattered wear consistent with age, but in generally good shape. Two short 3/8" dents in the silver of the lid on the front edge. The narrow thumb latch on the lid has a 1" segment (about a fourth of the total length) missing. The tortoiseshell has a diagonal fracture running the narrow width of the lid, just to the left of the monogram; this fracture is not open or separated. Eight of the sixteen retaining pins on the underside of the tortoiseshell are missing, and the shell is chipped or broken at most of these points; these breaks are not visible from the outside. Slight warping and a few tears to the paper-covered pasteboard underside. Wood interior good. Hallmarked (on the outside edge of the lid and the sleeve of the lid) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London leopard's head; 3) the date letter "d" for 1919-1920, and 4) the unidentified maker's mark "J & R F. Ld.". The lid marks are severely rubbed, but the sleeve marks are excellent.
