German Automaton Bird Box

first half 20th century, the gilt-bronze box decorated with delicate scrollwork, the top with an oval hinged cover, opening to reveal a singing bird, the bottom marked "Made in Germany", with a bird-shaped winding key.
h. 1-3/4", w. 4-1/4", d. 2-3/4"

  • Provenance: The Estate of Bonnie Bolding Swearingen, Birmingham, Alabama.
  • Condition: **In "as found" condition. It plays and the bird sings and moves but the lid does not close when the bird is finished chirping. It seems that the on/off lever in the front of the box is disconnected from the internal mechanism. Retains its winding key and the spring does not slip when wound up. Has good sound.
