Israel Davie Levi was born in Mannheim, Germany in 1751 into a prominent Jewish family. Upon his marriage to Marianne Aberle, he adopted his wife's surname and seemingly converted to Christianity. Aberle was a well-respected furniture, fine art, and objet d'arts dealer whose shop was both popular and lucrative. One of his most significant clients was Duke Karl II of Zweibrucken, whose estate was the famous Karlsberg Castle, which exists today only as ruins.

When plans for an art academy in Mannheim were being proposed, Aberle was named an honorary member of the Decorative Arts Department by the influential Court Historiographer Karl Theodor von Traitteur; Traitteur considered Aberle one of the city's most respected dealers.

After his death, Aberle's sons continued the business for decades.
