Good Regency Sterling Silver Gilt Covered Cup

hallmarked London, 1812-1813, by Robert Garrard I (1758-1818), of campana form, with applied oak-and-laurel mantled cartouches below a grapevine band, the calyx with applied acanthus and lily fronds, with acanthus-crested and mascaron-mounted addorsed fluted handles, with waisted and fluted foot, the fitted, ogee-domed lid with egg-and-dart and leaf-and-dart banding and pineapple finial.
h. 16-3/4", dia. 9"; 98.80 t. oz.

  • Condition: **In overall good condition, with some scattered dings, scuffs and scratches, but no breaks, repairs or significant dents noted. Oxidation in the recesses, and wear to the gilding on some areas of relief and sharp edges. A 3-3/4" section of the basal edge has been buffed through the gilding and slightly into the silver, probably a removed inscription, but the area is not appreciably thinned. Hallmarked (on the body) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "R" for 1812-1813; 4) the George III bust duty mark; and 5) the "RG" maker's mark of Robert Garrard; marks lightly worn but fully legible. The cover part marked (date letter "Q" for 1811-1812), as are all elements of the pineapple finial.
