Gorham “Medallion” Sterling Silver Cream and Sugar Set

third quarter 19th century, Providence, Rhode Island, including a creamer jug and open sugar bowl, each of spherical form with milled banding and high, arched strap handles, decorated with applied classical masque medallions, the creamer with acanthus-mounted spout, both raised on an ogee-domed circular foot.
creamer h. 4-1/2", dia. 3-1/4", sugar bowl h. 4-3/4", dia. 3-3/4"; 12.74 total t. oz.

  • Condition: **The creamer has had a professional repair to the handle, which was evidently broken off, with some small silver solder spots evident at both places where it meets the body, a short (1/4") segment of the milled banding, and a small (1/4") segment of the scrolling mount on the rim. Otherwise, the set is in good condition, with some wear (slightly more on the creamer, perhaps due to polishing after the repair) and scattered bumps and dings associated with age. Each piece marked (on the underside) with the Gorham "lion-anchor-G" trademark, "211" and "Sterling"; additionally lightly etched on the underside with owner's name/inventory number.
