  • Provenance: Kevin Stone Antiques, The Collection of Kevin Stone & Mark Diamond.

Notes: Grand Duchess Alexandra Nikolaevna (1825-1844) was the youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas I. Upon her betrothal to Prince Frederick William of Hesse (1820–1884), the only son of Prince William of Hesse and Princess Louise Charlotte of Denmark, in 1843, the Tsar commissioned an extravagant silver service for his daughter's dowry from Finnish-born master Carl Johann Tegelsten. The couple were married at the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg on January 28, 1844. Unfortunately, "Adini" (as she was affectionately known) had contracted tuberculosis shortly before, and died in August of the same year during premature childbirth at the tragically young age of 19. The bulk of the service is today in the Schloss Fasanerie in Eichenzell, Germany, founded in 1951 by Philipp Landgrave of Hesse (1896–1980) to conserve the collection of the House of Hesse. Some pieces, however, have appeared at auction; see, for instance, a tureen-on-stand from the service at Christie's London, November 29, 2010, lot 297; and a bottle cooler, Christie's London, November 30, 2015, lot 386.
