Harold Rudolph
(German/Louisiana, ca. 1850-1883/4)

"Cabins on the Gulf Coast"

oil on canvas
signed lower left and with a "W. E. Seebold, New Orleans" stencil en verso.
Framed.
16" x 30", framed 21-1/2" x 35-1/2"

Notes: Harold Rudolph arrived in New Orleans in 1873, and his abilities as an artist were lauded by both the New Orleans Republic and the Daily Picayune newspapers. Art dealer William E. Seebold supported Rudolph, as he did many local artists, by giving him a studio above his Canal Street gallery, exhibition opportunities and frequent dinners at his home. The Seebold stencil on the verso of the canvas reflects the relationship between patron and artist. Initially a portrait painter, Rudolph focused on southern landscapes after the death of his brother-in-law and portrait partner.
