Note: Born and raised in Utrecht, Holland, Hendrik Vanderwall studied at Delft Polytechnic Institute. In 1943, he was working as an engineer on a German ship that docked in New Orleans. Vanderwall was immediately captivated by the bohemian lifestyle of the French Quarter and never returned to the ship. An adept craftsman and self-taught artist, he pursued a variety of careers including elevator repair, antique restoration, and locomotive engineer.

As an artist, Vanderwall had an exhibition of his paintings and sketches of Louisiana history and landmarks at the International Trade Mart in 1964. Known for wearing a beret and smoking fourteen cigars a day, Vanderwall was among the French Quarter characters of the late 20th century.
