George III Hester Bateman (1708-1794) Sterling Silver Wine Funnel, hallmarked London, the date letter rubbed but probably 1782-1783, the straining bowl with detachable funnel and gadrooned rim, monogrammed "PAS", h. 4-1/2", dia. 3", 2.59 t. oz.

  • Condition: Overall Condition: Good. A few scattered bumps and pips, particularly around the tip of the funnel (which shows signs of reduction), and with one oval 1/4" dent on the bowl, but otherwise no condition issues noted beyond the expected wear of age. The funnel detaches from the bowl by means of a simple friction sleeve and collar, which remain quite snug. Nice monogram. Hallmarked (on the bowl) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter [probably] "g" for 1782-1783; and 4) the "HB" maker's mark of Hester Bateman; the funnel part-marked with the lion passant and maker's mark on the rim. Marks rubbed but discernible.
