    - Hunt Slonem, 2013

An avid collector and prolific artist, Hunt Slonem is beloved for his distinctive Neo-Expressionist style, characterized by vibrant color, thick brushstrokes, heavy impasto, and crosshatching. Drawing inspiration from Pop Art, Slonem frequently features repetitive patterns of tropical animals such as butterflies, birds, and bunnies; this repetition unlocks unconscious sentiments and beliefs. In the present lot, the recurring image of the butterfly represents Slonem's vision of hope and transformation, symbolizing rebirth and metamorphosis. The butterflies appear to float across the canvas, their wings blurred softly by Slonem's wet-on-wet technique, which further emphasizes the texture of the painting. Both the subject matter and tactile quality of the work underscore another key aspect of Slonem's work: a reverence for the splendor and fleeting beauty of nature. Red Butterflies III synthesizes the various themes that recur throughout Slonem's oeuvre, making it one of the most significant works of his career.

Slonem frequently moved with his family as a child, spending time in Hawaii and Latin America before settling in New Orleans to attend Tulane University. After earning his degree there, he continued to the prestigious Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture to refine his craft. Shortly thereafter, he made New York City his permanent home, where he has lived in his loft with his personal aviary of pet birds for over fifty years. His lifestyle and career became so intertwined that he quickly gained local celebrity status as his reputation in the art scene grew. Today, his works can be found in the permanent collections of distinguished museums around the world, such as the Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and numerous private collections.

The present lot was acquired directly from the artist twenty-five years ago during a pivotal moment in Slonem's career. It was part of the largest Hunt Slonem private collection in the world, making its offering at auction today unprecedented. New Orleans Auction Galleries is pleased to present Red Butterflies III.
