Important American Gothic Revival Rosewood and Marble-Top Center Table

ca. 1840-1850, attributed to the workshop of Alexander Roux, New York, after a design by Alexander Jackson Davis, retaining its original white marble top over a conforming frame with turned moldings and acorn-form drop finials, supported by six cluster columns and featuring a rare pierced fretwork hanging lantern between columns, and mounted to a platform base with three extended trefoil feet and beaded moldings.

Provenance: The Pollock-Krasner House, East Hampton, New York, from the Collection of Eugene V. Thaw.

Literature: An illustration of the drawing room at Kenwood is featured in Andrew Jackson Downing's book The Architecture of Country Houses and shows an example of this Gothic table as its centerpiece.

Notes: The design for this iconic table is attributed to the New York architect Alexander Jackson Davis (1803-1892), who is noted for designing the famous country villa "Kenwood", located outside of Albany, New York and built for industrialist Joel Rathbone in 1842.


  • Condition: **In overall fine condition. Structurally very sturdy. No missing elements. The marble top has some minor old stains and scuffs from age. The corner of the marble has an old chipped spot. Good, rich color and patina to the finish.
