Important Monumental Carved Oak Tall Case Clock

ca. 1900, the case attributed to the Tobey Furniture Co., Chicago, Illinois, the elaborate crest centered by a carved shield-form cartouche, flanked by winged griffins, the arched hood with carved figures of Father Time at the front corners, the mid-case with a central beveled glass door headed by a cherubic bust, the corner columns depicting female figures, the bombe base with a central relief-carved roundel of a Viking ship, the lower corners with dramatic seated griffins, with a triple-train nine-tube movement featuring Westminster Chimes and Chimes on Eight Bells, the face signed and retailed by Tiffany & Co., New York, the tubes marked "Walter H. Durfee, Providence, Rhode Island".

  • Provenance: The Van Benthuysen-Elms Mansion, St. Charles Ave., New Orleans, Louisiana; Purchased by Mrs. Josephine Carra Grieshaber, New Orleans, September 22, 1943, for $550; by descent to the present owner.

    Note: A copy of the receipt available to purchaser.
  • Condition: **In fine condition. No signs of damage or repairs. There is flaking to the painted moon dial. Tarnish and loss to the silvering on the face. The clock was fully serviced in 2009. Receipt available to purchaser. The back of the pendulum is stamped "81". The tubes are marked "Walter H. Durfee & Co. Prov. RI. Pat. Nov.8.87. Sep.8.88. Nov.1.92 Oct.6.96".
