Important Queen Anne Giltwood and Eglomise Overmantel Mirror

ca. 1710, attributed to Thomas and Rene Pelletier, the carved giltwood surround decorated with acanthus leaves and medallions framed in strapwork, on a stippled ground, the interior lined with beveled verre scarlet and gilt eglomise panels decorated with penwork gilt acanthus leaves, strapwork and bellflower drops, the three-part mirror plate with shallow beveled edges, and side panels decorated with cut scrollwork and fronds of leaves.
h. 45-1/4", w. 58"

  • Provenance: Sotheby's, Important English Furniture, Decorations & Ceramics, October 2007.

Note: The pattern of this mirror can be seen on mirrors in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the Victorian and Albert Museum, London. The side edges are carved with overlapping leaves, a detail frequently seen in French work, not surprising since their father, Jean Pelletier trained in Paris. It is suggested he fled France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, first going to Amsterdam and then on to London, where he established a business in Covent Garden, supplying gilt pier tables, mirrors, candle stands and picture frames to William II and the Queen and to the Duke of Montagu. The firm was named "Master of the Wardrobe" to William III for his London House and Boughton House. After Jean died in 1704, his two sons took over the business and ran it until 1712, after which they stopped carving.
  • Condition: **In fine condition. No sign of damage. Minor imperfections to the decoration on the beveled verre scarlet and gilt eglomise panels which line the three main mirror plates. Gentle rubbing and gilt loss to the outer frame from age. The three mirror plates with slight darkening to the silvering. Retains its original back boards.
