Impressive William IV Giltwood Convex Mirror

second quarter 19th century, the antique convex mirror plate framed with gadrooning and molded leaves, the primary frame decorated with circular molding divided into sections with bands of stippling and molded acanthus leaves, a displayed eagle atop an acanthus-leaf-carved plinth serving as the finial.
h. 52-1/2", dia. 27-1/2"

  • Condition: **In overall good condition, retaining an old, somewhat occluded mirror plate. The surface exhibits old gilt with scattered regilding and inpainting. Rubbing to the gilt and some scattered losses, most notably to the foliate elements at the base revealing the underlying gesso.

There are some visible shrinkage lines at seams. There is either shrinkage at a seam, or a repaired straight-line break at the bottom of the upper carving.

Some scattered repairs to tips of carving. The tips of two leaves are missing at the center bottom of the cylindrical molding.

A flat, unfinished circular surface on the bottom finial suggests an element may be missing.
