Italian Carved Marble Bust of Sappho

the famed Greek lyric poet wearing a laurel wreath, a posy of split pomegranates at her breast, both wreath and posy gilt-enhanced, on a fine Villefranche de Conflent marble columnar pedestal.

Provenance: The Estate of Donald J. Hurst, Waterloo, Iowa.


  • Condition: The bottom of the branch of pomegranates has been repaired and retains adhesive residue underneath it. There is an old repair to the corner of the marble base. There is another small adhesive (~1/4" repair) to proper right sleeve. There are scattered nicks and chips to the work, notably to the pedestal base. The laurel has been re-gilded. In overall good condition.
