(Fourth Quarter 16th/First Quarter 17th Century)

"Portrait of a Pope, Probably Sixtus V"

oil on canvas
unsigned.
Framed.
38-3/4" x 29", framed 43-3/4" x 33-3/4"

Provenance: Charlotte Nail Interiors, Houston, Texas; Private collection, Houston, Texas.

  • Condition: **Painting was relined a long time ago on course hand-woven linen/canvas. There are five wax/resin patches on front that have lightly "bled" through relining and are visible on the back. Inpainting is present to patched areas--to left front of camauro cap, to left shoulder, to lower left of face, to center of breast between stole, and to center bottom. Additional small areas of inpainting are scattered throughout; multiple varnish layers atop of older campaigns of inpainted restoration make it difficult to fully discern under UV light. There is light buckling to the upper left quadrant and some abrading around edges. Surface exhibits notable surface soiling, yellowing of varnish and craquelure - all of which are commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound and in overall good condition.
