  • Provenance: Obtained from the Buttersworth family in New Jersey by the present owner's grandfather; thence by descent.
  • Notes: One of the most acclaimed maritime artists of the 19th century, James E. Buttersworth was born in England. Little is known of his earliest years (genealogical information regarding the Buttersworth family is scant and often conflicting) though it is believed he was the son or grandson of the painter Thomas Buttersworth, with whom he received his artistic training. In the 1840s, the younger Buttersworth relocated with his family - then consisting of his wife and three children - to the shores of New Jersey, within view of New York Harbor. His paintings caught the attention of famed American lithographers Currier and Ives, and several popular prints were made of Buttersworth's ship portraits. The artist began to make a name for himself in his newly adopted country, and he soon opened his own studio.
A prolific artist, Buttersworth was lauded for his meticulously detailed depictions of the various sea-faring vessels of the day. His paintings, with their straightforward yet highly effective "side-view" composition, reveal tightly controlled and concise brushstrokes, an intentionally restrained color palette, and close attention to the specific characteristics of the ship; the intricacies of the rigging, the placement of the masts and sails, and the construction of the hull and how it "sits" upon the water, creating veritable maritime portraits.
Considered a maritime historian as well as an artist, Buttersworth's paintings are in numerous collections, including Mariner's Museum, Newport News, Virginia; U.S. Naval Academy Museum, Annapolis, Maryland; Bath Marine Museum, Maine; Peabody Museum, Salem, Massachusetts; and Mystic Seaport Museum, Connecticut.
