Jan van Chelminski (Polish/British/New York, 1851-1925) &
Robert Ward van Boskerck (American, 1855-1932)

"Prussian Cavalry Soldier on Horseback in the Woods"
oil on canvas
signed by each artist lower left.
Framed.
54" x 23", framed 58" x 27"

Provenance: Private collection, New Orleans, Louisiana, descended in the family.

Notes: Chelminski and van Boskerck were accomplished artists; the former specialized in Napoleonic military/war scenes, the latter in landscapes. This stunning chef d'oeuvre of military equestrian prowess in a sylvan winterscape captures the virtuoso and best of both artists and exemplifies the Sherwood Studio co-op that engendered this collaborative. In 1883 Sherwood Studios opened its doors as an in-residence living quarters and studios for artists and their families at 58 West 57th Street. The forty-five apartments were the first of their kind, on such a large scale, to foster an artist community of whom both Chelminski and Boskerck were long-term residents, routinely exhibiting together in the first floor reception galleries. This work was likely commissioned by another Sherwood resident or by a fellow Boskerck patron as the collaboration produced a much more in-depth landscape of paper birch trees and brush surrounding the cavalry officer.
