Japanese Four-Panel Folding Screen, Byobu, Edo period (1615-1868), ca. 1850s, ink, color and silver on paper mounted on folding panels, depicting three rabbits amidst reeds and marsh grasses along a riverbank, against a silver ground, overall, h. 30-3/8", w. 60".


  • Condition: Image retains structural and color intensity. Some darkening to silver background, very slight surface abrasions and soiling, and light scattering of losses to the lacquer frame as expected with age. A few holes in the paper lining the back of the far left panel, not visible from the front. Old typed label on reverse reads: "Old original works of art painting on rice paper four panels all-decoration, drawing by a member of the Kano school, subjects scouring rushes, pampas grasses and rabbit design on silver ground. 1850 A.D." No evidence of restoration or repair.
