Japanese Lacquer Cabinet-Shaped Kodogu-Bako (Incense Game Utensil Box), Edo period (1615-1868), 18th/19th century, a small container in the form of a kazaridana with bracket feet and three open shelves and a cabinet enclosed by a pair of hinged doors, the interiors decorated with bamboo, the shelves and exteriors decorated with a floral scroll pattern in gold and silver Hiramaki-e and Takamaki-e, h. 10-7/8", w. 6", l. 11-3/8". A kodogu-bako similar to this one sold at Bonham's, London on May 15, 2014. A comparable example can be found in the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, Maryland.


  • Condition: In overall good condition. Light patination on metal ornamentation. A few tiny pin-sized indentations on the top of the box. One missing pin on top left metal brace. Scattered nicks and little (1/4" and smaller) losses to the lacquer throughout including a small chip to the lower left corner, and one along the front edge of the lower middle shelf. A 4" long shrinkage crack along the front of the cabinet doors with an accompanying 1/4" loss to lacquer rim. An unevenness to the lacquer on the underside of the top left corner. No significant breaks or evidence of restoration. Wear is consistent with age, material and gentle use.
