Japanese Lacquer Cricket Cage, Meiji period (1868-1912), the black and gilt cage in the form of a norimono with sliding doors and scrolling vine, the sides and top of the cage decorated with family crests, the interior padded with sliding doors, each with a slatted window, h. 9-1/4", w. 6-7/8", l. 9-1/2".


  • Condition: In overall good condition. Norimono-shaped cage without typical long curved supporting bar. Otherwise, all parts are present including sliding doors and interior silk embroidered pillow. Pillow is still largely intact with some losses and unraveling around the edges. Some crazing around one corner of the roof and patination to gilt-metal fittings. Some nicks and abrasions on the feet and light scratches on the underside. Wear to surface, including some rubbing and darkening to gilt decoration, is consistent with age, material and use. No visible evidence of restoration.
