Jean Joseph Vaudechamp

French, 1790-1866; Active New Orleans 1831-1839

Jean Joseph Vaudechamp
(French, 1790-1866; Active New Orleans 1831-1839)

"Portrait of a Young Woman, Partially Draped"

oil on canvas
signed and dated "Vaudechamp 1844".
Framed.
36-3/4" x 29", framed 45" x 38"

Notes: This portrayal of a partially nude woman with her self-assured gaze is a rare glimpse into Jean Joseph Vaudechamp's later career, painted two years before his only other known nude, "Portrait of a Young Girl, Partially Clothed". Both paintings reveal Vaudechamp's masterful modeling of the human form, his elegant composition, and use of soft light dappling the sitter's body. A French, academically trained artist and a pupil of the famous Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson, Vaudechamp became the most sought-after portraitist in New Orleans during the 1830s, where he spent his winters painting members of the prominent Creole families. His success in New Orleans appears to have provided him with financial security, and although he continued to exhibit at the Salon, this brought him little critical acclaim. The two nudes are a departure from his usual subject matter; suggesting that perhaps he was experimenting with different genres in his later years. This evocative portrait is the first nude by the artist to have been offered for sale outside of Paris. • Condition: **In overall very good professionally restored condition. Craquelure throughout. Some areas of abrading, especially along edges where canvas meets frame. Pinprick-sized areas of discoloration/soiling along with a few pinprick-sized areas of whitish accretions. Evidence of past restoration: painting was relined some time ago. Areas of inpainting throughout but mainly in background, area of hand and cloth; face and chest with only minor filler inpainting. Probable old vertical repair at left edge.
