  • Provenance: Acquired from the artist; Private collection, Louisiana.

Notes: Clemmer became a teacher and eventually director of the Arts and Crafts Club and was given the task of shutting down the club after the death of their generous benefactor Sarah Henderson, a sugar refining heiress. In 1951, Clemmer joined the faculty at Tulane University's School of Architecture and then was appointed Chairman of the Newcomb Art Department.

Over the course of his seven-decade career, Clemmer's styles, techniques and use of materials continuously evolved. During a visit to Mexico sometime in the 1970s, he discovered papel de amate, which is a type of bark paper traditionally made by the Otomi Indians from indigenous trees. Papel de amate historically had been used for religious art and sacred codices.

Clemmer embraced the unique papers and created designs that work with the natural textures and fibers of the papel de amate. The weight and texture of papel de amate appealed to Clemmer, and he used the paper over a period of twenty years to create a stunning series of paintings.
