"An Early Shire"

oil on canvas
signed lower left.

Notes: New Orleans Auction Galleries would like to thank agricultural historian Alan Cheese, M.Sc., A.N.C.A. for his information regarding this painting: "This horse is an early Shire . . . . Until the early 20th century the Shire did not have the copious leg hair that became fashionable later, following of widespread use of a stallion called, "Lockinge Forest King". 19th century Shires were much cleaner legged and the younger Herring was active when this type of Shire was fashionable, the breed society being founded in 1878."

  • Condition: **In overall good condition. Abrading along edges where canvas meets frame. Evidence of past restoration: canvas has been relined and now backed in fabric; scattered inpainting throughout including old filler repairs to stretcher marks. Some yellowing to varnish layer along with some abrading at lower left. Faint craquelure.
