John Marshall Gamble is best known for his colorful depictions of California's wildflowers and landscapes. After spending his youth in New Zealand, he relocated with his family to San Francisco, where he trained under Emil Carlsen and later briefly attended the prestigious Académie Julian in Paris. Upon returning to California, Gamble established a studio and began painting en plein air throughout the San Francisco area. His early career was disrupted by the catastrophic 1906 earthquake, which destroyed his studio and much of his work. In its aftermath, Gamble set out for Los Angeles; however, during his journey along Route 101, he encountered the wildflower blooms near Santa Barbara for the first time. Profoundly inspired, he chose to remain there, establishing a new studio and reinvigorating his practice with a heightened emphasis on the region's landscapes, as well as a more vibrant color palette.

In Santa Barbara, Gamble became a central figure in the local arts community. He served as president of the Santa Barbara Art Association and held both teaching and leadership roles at the Santa Barbara School of the Arts, including President of the Board. His legacy endures in the region, where his work remains widely appreciated, and is held in numerous public and private collections along the West Coast.
