  • Provenance: Estate of John McCrady, New Orleans, Louisiana; Collection of Naomi Marshall, Downtown Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana.

In 1928, Reverend Edward McCrady moved his young family to Oxford, Mississippi where he assumed the rectorship at St. Peter's Episcopal Church and eventually became Dean of the Philosophy Department at University of Mississippi. For his son, artist John McCrady, his beloved Oxford became a continual source of inspiration throughout his artistic career.

In the drawing Saturday Promenade, Oxford, Mississippi, dated 1963, McCrady depicts a busy day on the historic square. Familiar storefronts and signs populate the composition, which includes a sign for the Lyric Theater and a sidewalk sign for the Ritz Cinema. The Ritz Cinema was popular among locals and college students for showing horror and monster movies and featured an eerie, dark interior atmosphere and a painted mural. In McCrady's work, the Ritz was advertising the Boris Karloff movie "Corridors of Blood" from 1958. In the foreground, the Blaylock Drugstore features an oval hanging sign for Fortune's Famous Ice Cream, which was served at its soda fountain. Today, the Fortune's Famous Ice Cream sign remains attached to the building which houses Square Books.
