  • Provenance: Estate of John McCrady, New Orleans, Louisiana; Downtown Gallery, Naomi Marschall, New Orleans, Louisiana.

In 1942, John McCrady joined the war effort and worked as a tool designer at the Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Co. plant on the New Orleans lakefront. Consolidated Vultee earned war-time contracts and specialized in producing amphibious seaplanes including the PBY-5 Catalina patrol bombers. The "flying boats" were notable for not needing a runway and instead launching down a ramp into Lake Pontchartrain for takeoff.

Consolidated Vultee employed women at their various plants. In McCrady's drawing "Building of the PBY-5 Catalina Sea Planes", two formidable women are placed prominently in the center, working on the wing of a seaplane. Breaking gender barriers of the time, women contributed to the war effort during World War II by working as welders, technicians and mechanics.

McCrady offered his fellow employees at the plant evening art classes. The classes were so popular that they encouraged the artist to open The John McCrady Art School on Bourbon Street shortly after.
