  • Provenance: Estate of John McCrady, New Orleans, Louisiana; Downtown Gallery, Naomi Marshall, New Orleans, Louisiana.

John McCrady typically drew preliminary sketches for his paintings. The sketch for Political Rally conveys the heightened emotions and fervor surrounding elections. Set in Oxford Square, a speaker stands above a gathered crowd with his arm raised, giving an animated speech. McCrady identified the scene as Bilbo Oxford Square Rally en verso of the drawing, and, in the finished painting, he placed a political flyer attached to tree in support of Theodore Bilbo, referencing Bilbo's election to the U.S. Senator from Mississippi in 1934.

Theodore Bilbo (1877-1947) was a controversial Mississippi politician who was infamous for his support of segregation and white supremacy. As governor, he caused an uproar locally by attempting to move the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) from Oxford to Jackson. Bilbo was of short stature, wore flashy clothing, and was nicknamed "The Man" because he often referred to himself in the third person.
