John Wesley Carroll (American, 1892-1959), "Portrait of an Elegant Woman Wearing a Black Dress with a Ruff Collar", 1936, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right, 50" x 30". Framed.
- Condition: In good "as found" condition. The gilt exhibits normal rubbing and wear, revealing the underlying gesso at scattered points, most notably at the base beneath the panel. It exhibits normal shrinkage, age and wear. Carving in good condition. The mirror plate has horizontal breaks extending out from the centrally-mounted sconce backplate. The brass sconce arms are askew less than perpendicular and need to be straightened. The electric plastic candle sleeves are stained and worn. The returns are missing from the bottommost molding.
