John White Alexander (American, 1856-1915), "Lake Scene", watercolor on paper, signed lower left, sight 9-1/2" x 13-1/2". Glazed and framed. Alexander began his career as an illustrator for Harper's Weekly before moving to Munich to study with Frank Duveneck (1848-1919); he later traveled to Venice, Florence and Paris, befriending many artistic luminaries along the way. A popular and successful artist, Alexander exhibited widely across the United States and Europe. He was a member of the Societe National des Beaux Arts and the National Academy of Design, and was named a Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur in 1901.
