Notes: Jose Maria Velasco was one of Mexico's most accomplished landscape artists. In 1858, he enrolled in the Art Academy of San Carlos where he studied with Italian painter Eugenio Landesio, who emphasized the close study of nature. Velasco focused exclusively on the landscape and geography of his native country. During his lifetime, he earned national and international acclaim.

In 1874, Velasco moved his family to La Villa de Guadalupe, on the outskirts of Mexico City, where the artist would reside for the rest of his life. At this time, he began an ambitious series of paintings of the panoramic vistas of Valley of Mexico.

    Frame with surface marks, nicks and abrasions; some slight separation in corners.
