Joseph Wheelwright

(American, 1948-2016)

"Bone Head", 1993

shell and bone sculpture
h. 42", w. 42", d. 24"

  • Provenance: Allan Stone Gallery, New York, New York; Estate of Ann and Howard Barnett, New Orleans, Louisiana.

It seems to me that one of the most miraculous aspects of human endeavor is that people devote their whole lives to something that has no utilitarian function…for the purpose of spiritual gratification of the human soul and mind.
    Joseph Wheelwright
    Interview with Peter J. Marcucci
    Slippery Rock Gazette

An academically trained artist, Wheelwright attended Yale University and received an MFA in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design. Equally adept at carving wood and stone, and casting in bronze, he quickly garnered attention for his series of monumental heads and figures. These sculptures were often placed in natural settings, carefully positioned within a landscape to appear as if they were emerging from the land. Wheelwright soon began to experiment with found natural objects – bones, shells, rocks, roots, coral and branches – to create a series of skulls. The skull offered here, formed of carefully placed bones, is one of the smaller examples and reveals the meticulous planning necessary for the successful creation of such a work.
