  • Literature: Hoffman, Louise C., An Artist's Vision: Josephine Crawford, The Historic New Orleans Collection, 2009, illus. pp. 123.

Josephine Crawford's creative spirit initially found expression in poetry that referenced her Louisiana family and the ancestral home at 612 Royal Street in the French Quarter. It was not until she was in her thirties and after enrolling in classes at the Arts and Crafts Club School, that she turned her attentions to painting. After, she furthered her studies in Vienna and Paris, where she was introduced to the new art movements of Cubism and Modernism.

In 1934, Crawford began a series of family portraits that she painted in a unique fashion by painting on the wallpaper that decorated the parlor of her family home. To prep the surface, she applied a thin layer of gray paint, leaving the floral wallpaper as a frame for each portrait. Woman with Her Dog (Possibly Self Portrait) is a smaller version of the eight larger family portraits that are in the collection of The Historic New Orleans Collection.
  • Condition: Horizontal creases throughout image. Surface dirt and scattered dark accretions. Repaired diagonal tear upper left, loss lower right, and diagonal crease in lower left corner (all wallpaper border). Uneven edges of wallpaper and painting. Areas of face fluoresce under UV light, but possibly the hand of the artist.
