Large French Beauchene-Mounted Disarticulated Spiny Lobster

genus Panulirus, mounted with LED wires to illuminate the carapace and articulation, presented on a turned, black-painted rod in a glass vitrine, the mount-maker's signature "Oilio" on the base.
sight 29" x 18"; case 42-1/4" x 27-1/2" x 16"

  • Notes: The "Beauchene" mounting is named for French anatomist and surgeon Edme Francois Chauvot de Beauchene (1780-1830), who developed the disarticulated or "exploded" display of human skulls to facilitate the identification of the lines of suture and points of articulation. The laborious and expensive technique was used to create high-quality research specimens, and was later expanded to include skeletons of other animals. The technique is particularly suited to crustaceans, as here, giving a fascinating look at the beautiful and intricate interlocking workings of the exoskeleton.
