Large French Belle Epoque Silver-Gilt and Glass Claret Jug

ca. 1900, by Joseph Alexandre Martel, Paris, first standard (.950) silver, the pear-shaped glass body with diamond-cut base and fluted neck, with a silver-gilt collar of laurel and acanthus banding on a matte ground, with "duck's beak" spout and squared handle with acanthus and ram's masque mounts, the hinged lid en suite and opening to a detachable gilt-capped glass cooling cylinder.

  • Condition: **In quite good condition, with no dents, breaks or repairs noted. Some wear to the gilding, particularly on the high relief of the handle terminal, and the spout and circumference of the lid. The glass is in excellent condition, with no chips or frits noted. Marked (on the collar) with the first standard "Minerva" head and (on the lid) with the maker's mark of Joseph Alexandre Martel.
