Large George III Sterling Silver Armorial Salver

  • Condition: Overall Condition: Good. Scattered surface wear - nicks, pips and scuffs - consistent with age. Some thinning and an unusual 3/4" long, rough, gold-colored spot on the underside suggest that the well-engraved armorial is a later replacement and/or enhancement of an earlier one. Hallmarked (on the underside) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "C" for 1798-1799; 4) the George III bust duty mark; and 5) the "WF" script maker's mark of William Fountain [Grimwade 3127]. Marks excellent but for the maker's mark, which is partially rubbed but legible. Additional faint scratch marks (on the underside) "99 Mars Fretat", "199/9" and "161".
