Large Japanese Sumida-ware Vase

20th century, of baluster form, with broad shoulders narrowing to a short neck with flared lip, neck and shoulders with all-over thick blue-green glaze, the remainder of the body unglazed, with applied figures of various forms, having a four-character studio mark within a double-gourd-form reserve to the back.
h. 25", w. 12-1/2"

  • Condition: **Vase itself in very good condition with no visible losses or repairs, and with minor blue-green glaze intact. There are scattered losses and repairs throughout relief figures for which additional photos are recommended. Vase has a few hairline cracks between the figural reliefs which are likely due to innate firing lines and pressure fissures that have opened up between the ceramic coils over time.
