Large Pair of Late George III Sterling Silver Goblets

hallmarked London, 1802-1803, by Robert Gaze, each with a deep bucket-form bowl above a knopped stem and cavetto-molded circular foot.
h. 9", dia. 4"; 29.94 total t. oz.

  • Condition: **Both goblets have some scattered nicks and scuffs, with some dents and dings around the bottom of the bowl. One has a vertical long (1-1/4') but shallow dent on the side of the bowl. Both goblets show evidence of a removed armorial inscription on the bowl in the form of short, light scratches covering the area, and a removed inscription on the underside of the foot with similar scratches, with traces of the inscription remaining. The silver is of quite heavy gauge, so these removals have not appreciably thinned the silver. Hallmarked (on the underside) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "G" for 1802-1803; 4) the George III bust duty mark; and 5) the "RG" maker's mark of Robert Gaze. Marks nice and clean. An attractive pair not without condition issues, most of which could be greatly improved with minimal restoration.
