Late George III Sterling Silver Gilt Galleried Tray

hallmarked London, 1802-1803, by Joseph Preedy, canted rectangular form, with openwork floral and vintage rinceaux gallery and raised on four acanthus-scroll feet, the plateau engraved with the margravial arms of Manners with Seymour in pretence.
28-3/4" x 19-1/2"; 175.54 t. oz.

Notes: The arms here are those of John Manners, Marquess of Granby (1721-1770) and his wife Lady Frances Seymour (1728-1761), daughter of the Duke of Somerset. As the arms were made several decades after their deaths, it was probably made to match a service inherited by one of their younger children; the Marquess predeceased his father, the Duke of Rutland, and thus never assumed the dukedom, which passed to the Marquess' eldest legitimate son, Charles Manners (1754-1787), 4th Duke of Rutland.

  • Condition: **In overall good condition, with some scattered scuffs, scratches and dings on the plateau, the most prominent being a 5" scratch under the armorial (visible in catalogue photograph) and a pinpoint ding near the edge. Otherwise no issues noted beyond the expected signs of wear commensurate with age and use, including some mellowing to the gilding. Annealing ripples and scaling on the underside. Superb engraving on the armorial. Hallmarked (on the underside) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "G" for 1802-1803; 4) the George III bust duty mark; and 5) the "IP" maker's mark of Joseph Preedy. Marks excellent.
