Late George III Sterling Silver Inkstand, hallmarked Sheffield, 1808-1809, by Nathaniel Smith & Co., of rounded rectangular form, with gadrooned band, coquille feet and squared handles, fitted with a pair of pen trays and three receptacles for cylindrical molded gadrooned glass pounce pot and ink and water wells, with silver caps, the taperstand cap of later date (hallmarked London, 1835-1836, by Charles Fox), the silver elements engraved with the crest of Wilson of Stowlangstoft Hall, Suffolk and monogrammed "KM", overall, h. 5-3/4", l. 8-1/2", w. 6-3/4", 28.31 t. oz (excluding glass wells).


  • Condition: Good. Scattered pinpoint dings and scuffs, but otherwise in very good condition. Sits very slightly askew with an insignificant "wobble". One silver cap has a repair to a split on the sleeve. One or two small frits on the glass elements, and one has a 3/8" chip to the lower edge of one gadroon. Hallmarked (on the underside) with: 1) the Sheffield crown; 2) the sterling lion passant; 3) the date letter "P" for 1808-1809; 4) the George III bust duty mark; and 5) the "N.S. & Co." maker's mark of Nathaniel Smith & Co.; marks very crisp. The caps part-marked on the sleeve, but very worn. The taperstick with later hallmarks as noted; the bobeche part-marked; the extinguisher unmarked. The underside additionally with inked inventory/accession number "OOSZZ.901" under clear lacquer.
