Limoges Enamel Plaque

  • Condition: The enamel has an amoeba-shaped flake of about 1/4" by 1/2" in the upper center, and some craquelure commensurate with age. There is a small nail hole at both the top and bottom center edge; the top one is associated with the enamel flake. There is a gilt outline to the plaque which is mostly covered by the frame and doesn't show in the catalogue/online image. There is loss to the ebony liner adjacent to the frame which is visible in the catalogue/online image. The upper arcaded portion of the frame has a 1/2" square loss to the tortoiseshell veneer and the upper molding has been broken off and poorly reattached, and there are minor losses to each outside edge of that molding, as well as a chip to the center associated with the crack. The base wood of the frame is oak, with a conifer used for the liner. A square nail extends down from the frame to keep the enamel in the frame but all other visible nails are round. There are also losses to the outside edges of the bottom molding.
