Louis XVI Provincial Silver Baby's Rattle

late 18th century, Rouen, maker's mark "EJS", spiral fluted, decorated with scrolls and bells, with masque-faced whistle at one end and carved nacre teether at the other, with single ring.
l. 7-1/4"; 3.24 t. oz. (including nacre teether)

  • Condition: **Some scattered dents and bumps, including the whistle tip, the lower part of three of the attached scrolls, and two of the bells. One scroll has some lateral cracks but remains attached, another is broken at the end nearest the whistle; evidence of spot repairs in several other places on the scrolls. The nacre teether is ill-fitting in its socket (though securely attached by a pin) indicating a later replacement. The piece is marked with: 1) (near the handle) the Rouen small silver decharge mark 1781-1789; and 2) (on the underside of the whistle) the "EJS" maker's mark, crowned and centering a heart.
