English Mahogany, Brass and Glass Pub Coin Till

first quarter 20th century, an early form of a cash register and change maker for pubs and other businesses, the front with an enameled sign reading, "By Her Majesty's Royal Letters Patents, Tel. No. Central 4343, J.C. Cox, Inventor, Patentee & Manufacturer, Lit. Water Lane, Queen Victoria St., London, E.C.".
h. 50-1/2", w. 55-1/2", d. 13"

  • Provenance: Note: The coin was dropped into the brass slot at the top, where it descended through a zig-zag system of trays between the panes of glass, before dropping in the locked money drawer in the base. The mechanism was actuated by a set of brass levers, which caused a bell to ring each time a coin was inserted.
