Notes: “It is not the quantity, but the quality of light, that makes things visible” - Mariano Fortuny

An artist, set designer and textile manufacturer, the prodigiously talented Mariano Fortuny was born in Granada in 1871, and made Venice his permanent home in 1889. Fortuny first created his namesake lamp in 1907, and it continues to be just as iconic and contemporary today as it was when initially produced. Conceived as a means for a new system of indirect lighting for the stage, the inspiration for the base of the lamp was a camera tripod with its adjustable central leg. For the lampshade, Fortuny inverted the usual shape, allowing for the shade to be manipulated as an adjustable tool to direct the light. Pallucco has continuously produced the Fortuny lamp since 1985 in several variants.
