Maximilien Luce
(French, 1858-1941)

"Soldats a la Gare", 1916

oil on cardboard
signed and dated lower left. Framed.
21-3/8" x 16-1/5"

Provenance: Christie's, South Kensington, November 28, 2007, lot 54; Private collection, Belle Alliance Plantation, Lafourche Bayou, Louisiana.

Notes: To be included in Denise Bazetoux's forthcoming catalogue raisonne, vol. 4, on Luce.

  • Condition: **In overall very good condition with no visible losses or repairs. Under UV light, the upper right corner has "retouched" inpainting, and a few areas fluoresce indigo in the negative space between the crowd in the left background, and on the lapel and button area of the standing soldier on the far right. The anomaly is likely due to the chemical composition of the pigments, as inpainting was not detected in these areas under regular and high-powered light. The painting also exhibits light surface soiling throughout, which can be easily removed with cleaning.
